What is the EUDR? – Simply Explained
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) was adopted in 2023 to stop deforestation caused by EU imports.
It applies to products that:
- are made from wood, pulp, or paper
- or are produced from raw materials such as cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, or beef
Effective from:
- December 30, 2025 for large and medium-sized companies
- June 30, 2026 for small businesses
Who is required to do what?
Directly obligated:
- Manufacturers & traders who import or distribute virgin fiber paper
- Printing companies & processors working with virgin fiber products
Indirectly affected:
Also, offices or copy shops that use virgin fiber paper must ensure their products are EUDR-compliant.
An office using virgin fiber copy paper is not itself required to submit a due diligence declaration – but it must not use products that violate the EUDR.
Conclusion: The better documented and traceable, the safer – or simply switch to recycled paper!
